Welcome to the Department
of Microbiology in the Franklin
College of Arts and Sciences at the
University of Georgia. Since its formation,
in 1953, the Department of Microbiology has enjoyed sustained
growth and developed an international reputation in prokaryotic
biology. There are a wide variety of research programs available
in the department, including microbial physiology and genetics,
cell biology, microbial pathogenesis, ecology, evolution, population
biology, protein biochemistry, biotechnology, and bioinformatics.
A significant feature of our research programs is the diversity
of microorganisms that are studied.
In 2003, we celebrated 50 years of excellence in graduate and
undergraduate research and teaching in our department. In
2006 U.S. News and World Report ranked the University of Georgia
tied for 8th nationally and 4th among public institutions, for
graduate programs in Microbiology. Undergraduates from
other colleges and universities have the opportunity to experience
the research environment in our department through the Summer
REU Program. Explore our web site to discover the many research
and training opportunities we have to offer.
