Erinn Howard Receives the 2006 Dr. William "Jack" and Jane Payne Fellowship in Microbiology

This award acknowledges Erinn's outstanding contributions to research, teaching and service.  Erinn's accomplishments include first authorship on a Science paper in 2006, and excellence in teaching for Marine Sciences and Biology laboratories and NSF REU participants.

Stephanie Bose Receives the 2006 Dr. Joy Porter Williams Fellowship in Microbiology

Stephanie has an outstanding record as a teacher.  She received recognition for her Teaching Portfolio, she has served as Instructor of Record for MIBO 2500, and she participated in the Teaching Assistant Mentor Program and received an Outstanding TA Award.

Microbiology Graduate Student Association 2007 (MGSA) Elections
Congratulations and thanks to the new MGSA officers: Jason Cloward (President), Katie Pennington (Social Chair), Lyla Lipscomb (Treasurer), Swapna Bhat (GSA Representative) and Chris Reisch (GAC Liason).

Outstanding Teaching Assistant Awards
Todd Smith received an Outstanding Teaching Award for his many contributions as a MIBO teaching assistant.  Chandra Carpenter received an Outstanding Teaching Award for her excellent work as a Biology teaching assistant.  She is one of 15 outstanding TAs university wide selected this year to participate in the TA mentor program.

Graduate School Excellence in Teaching Award
Emily Henriksen received a Graduate School Excellence in Teaching Award.  This award is given to no more than five recipients annually from among approximately 600 grad student assistants.

ASM Kadner Institute
Chandra Carpenter and Dr. Kamlesh Jangid were sponsored by the Microbiology department to attend the ASM Kadner Institute.  This is a one week, intensive, hands on training in grantsmanship, scientific presentations, and teaching.  The Institute is held each summer and is limited to 32 participants.

Research Awards Banquet
Pamela Bonner was honored at the Research Awards Banquet for her selection as the sole student in the Life Sciences to receive the Graduate Student Excellence in Research Award this year.

Marine Biological Laboratories Workshop
Laura Williams was accepted at the prestigious Marine Biological Laboratories Workshop on Genomics and Evolution and is one of only a dozen students asked to stay on for the advanced phase of this course that follows the main workshop.

Outstanding Paper Award
Congratulations to Brian Higgins and Chandra Carpenter in Anna Karls' lab for selection of their work in the Outstanding Paper Award from UGA Chapter of Sigma Xi.  Their winning paper is: Chromosomal context directs high-frequency precise excision of IS492 in Pseudoalteromonas atlantica.  PNAS 2007 104:1901-1906.
