I feel a privilege to give my personal appreciation to David Starkweather for his great sincere talent as a wonderful cellist and for his pure talent as an interpreter at the devotion of music and one of the best cellists of his generation. (11/15/85)

The Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra presented a concert of high quality, polarized between music of France and Austria, with an extraordinary cellist and the conducting of Tulio Belardi. ...at the end the Haydn Concerto No. 2 in D Major for violoncello and orchestra, the soloist again being the singular and very musical virtuoso from North America, who animated all three movements of the piece, David Starkweather being obliged to provide a subtle solo encore. Cellist David Starkweather, whose fine work I have commented on very approvingly elsewhere, was heard in the Bach Suite No. 3 in C Major for Solo Cello BWV 1009. The Prelude was played with smooth scale lines and graceful phrasings. The ensuing dances were performed with rhuthmic grace and fluidity. (8/5/93)

The sensitive phrasing and Starkweather's obvious technical facility made it the strongest performance of the evening. (5/19/88)

The evening followed with...cello concertos of Henri Vieuxtemps and Antonín Dvorák. During these works, Starkweather demonstrated himself to be the demanding sort who strives for precision. His playing added a decisiveness to the concertos, providing the defining touch to the compositions whether the mood was somber or vibrant. (11/21/88)

In the "Stücke im Volkston" opus 102 of Robert Schumann... the young American, surrounded by the prancing and fanciful beat of the piano, found a very riveting and arresting ardor and restless fire. (12/85)
