General Canning Information
Find Your Altitude
Usually, you can find your altitude at your local planning commission or zoning office, on a webpage about your town or city, or contact your local Cooperative Extension Office.
Here are two on-line tools:
1. US Geological Survey elevation search tool at http://geonames.usgs.gov
A service of the U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Dept. of the Interior.
Enter city name, state, and county. There are multiple listings for a county provided. So, back on the entry page, you can also select a feature such as “schools” or “churches” to see listings closest to your home.
From their FAQs: Elevation figures are not official and do not represent precisely measured or surveyed values. The data are extracted from digital elevation models of the National Elevation Dataset for the given coordinates and may differ from elevations cited in other sources, including those published on USGS topographic maps….The elevation figures are sufficiently accurate for most purposes of general information. Efforts are continuously being made to improve the accuracy and resolution of both GNIS and NED data, the results of which will be reflected at both sites.
2. The National Map search tool for your exact address at http://nationalmap.gov/
A service of the U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Dept. of the Interior.
- Select "Go to Viewer" then “Find Place.”
- In the pop-up window, select the link for “Address” and you will get a form to fill in your exact address. After completing, select “Zoom to Address.”
- A map of your area, street or road will appear; you can zoom in and out on a scale in the upper right of the page.
- Select the link for “Elevation” from the left-hand menu.
- Click on the map of your area at the approximate location of your home.
- Detailed information including the elevation will appear in another pop-up box.
If you have trouble with their pop-up windows and steps due to pop-up blockers on your computer, you will have to follow their instructions for the website. The National Center for Home Food Preservation cannot help you with navigating this site.
