chaired by Dr. Chadwick F. Smith. Smith is Clinical Professor of
Orthopaedic Surgery and Biomedical Engineering at USC and President-Elect
of SICOT (the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and
Traumatology). Membership in this working group is open to all individuals

Orthopaedic Surgery Research Network Expands
Following the launch of the California Orthopaedic Research Network (CORN)
on October 29, 2002, there has been growing interest and increasing
engagement in the uses of high-performance networking throughout the
telemedicine, telerobotics, and other medical research communities.
Chadwick F. Smith, Internet2 chair of the Orthopaedic Surgery Working Group
announced the expansion of CORN at the annual meeting of the American
Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons in New Orleans on February 5. The expanded
network, Western Orthopaedic Research Network (West ORN), will now include
California plus 13 additional western states, Canada, and Mexico. Further
expansion to include Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Peru, and Uruguay
will follow in the coming months.

New World Symphony Workshop and Symposium, March 28 & 29
Internet2 and the New World Symphony are hosting a two-day event (at the
New World Symphony campus on Miami Beach) to introduce educators and
technicians from major music schools to the power of high-performance
networking for distance education and music collaboration.
The March 28 Internet2 Performance Production Workshop is designed
primarily for technical personnel supporting schools of music and
performing arts departments involved in producing live performances and
music education events over Internet2. The focus will be on performance
production technologies designed to help members create successful
multi-site, interactive, digital video/audio productions. There is a charge
of $125.00 to attend this event and registration is required. The March 29 Internet2 Music Education Symposium is geared toward deans,
presidents, administrators and faculty of schools of music. Michael Tilson
Thomas, Artistic Director for the New World Symphony, will talk about the
New World Symphony's experience with distance education over Internet2. To
demonstrate the power and potential of using Internet2 for real time
interaction in music education, live demonstrations will be presented,
including several master classes with remote participants. There is no
charge for this event, but registration is required.
Those attending the March 28 Workshop are welcome to stay for March 29
Symposium. Saturday evening, March 29, all will be treated to a reception
and live New World Symphony concert at the Lincoln Theatre conducted by
Maestro Thomas.

National Health Information Infrastructure
Doug Van Houweling, Internet2 President and CEO, testified to the National
Committee on Vital Health and Statistics (NCVHS) at the Hearings on
National Health Information Infrastructure (NHII) in Washington, D.C. on
January 27. The two-day event included six panel sessions on topics ranging
from Internet technology to personal health information and authentication
issues. The NCVHS-NHII Workgroup hosted the event.
Van Houweling presented at the first session, titled "The Current and
Future Internet," with Vint Cerf of WorldCom and Aubrey Bush of the
National Science Foundation. Van Houweling promoted a vision for the role
of the advanced Internet in health care and emphasized Internet2's role in
supporting health care research.
This hearing was broadcast live over the Internet, with the help of the
Department of Veterans Affairs. Recordings of broadcasts from the past six
months are available from the VA Virtual Conference Archive at
http://www.va.gov/virtconf.htm .

Internet2 Detective Version 2 Now Available
Version 2.0 of the Internet2 Detective is now available. The Internet2
Detective is a small, easy to install and use application that can tell you
if a computer can access an Internet2 backbone network, how much bandwidth
may be available, and whether you can receive multicast streaming media. A
small icon in the corner of the desktop indicates at-a-glance the
capabilities of a computer's network connection. Version 2.0 adds the
ability to test network performance between any two computers running the
Internet2 Detective.
The Internet2 Detective, written by Internet2 Applications Technologist Bob
Riddle and Internet2 student intern Adam Saltsman, builds on Iperf and the
Multicast Beacon developed by the National Science Foundation-funded NLANR
Distributed Applications Support Team.

Include a Live Demo with your Internet2 Spring 2003 Member Meeting Presentation
Submissions for track session proposals for the spring member meeting are
now closed. Because Internet2 will not be featuring a separate demo area
for high-performance networking applications at the Member Meeting, we
would like to strongly encourage our members to incorporate live,
interactive demos as part of their track session presentations. Internet2
staff will provide members with the technical support, and some of the
equipment resources, required for presenting these demos. If you have
already submitted a spring member meeting track session proposal, and would
like to consider incorporating a live demo into your presentation, please
complete the form found at the URL below or contact Elaine Lauerman via
email <ekl@internet2.edu>.

Internet2 Commons Site Coordinator Training, March 26-27
Internet2 Commons Site Coordinator Training will be held in conjunction
with the SURA/ViDe Digital Video Workshop in Atlanta on March 26-27. Each
university that wishes to participate in the Internet2 Commons worldwide
videoconferencing service must designate a qualified campus site
coordinator. This training will be taught by nationally recognized
professionals in digital videoconferencing. Hands-on training with
equipment will be included. Some of the training topics include:
- Audio and video basics
- Room/environments conditions for videoconferences
- Operating and troubleshooting procedures common to
videoconferencing systems
There will be a fee of $100 for the training. A detailed agenda and online
registration will soon be available at the following URL:

Integrated Communication BOF at Internet2 Spring 2003 Member Meeting
An Integrated Communication BOF will be held at the Internet2 Spring 2003
Member Meeting on Thursday, April 10. Integrated communication combines
various real-time, or near real-time, communications media (text, voice,
video, and image based) under the umbrella of "Presence." Since these
elements are all layered on SIP/SDP, they need to be strongly oriented to
Internet/IETF standards. Spring member meeting attendees who are interested
in discussing the potential impact of integrated communication technologies
and services are encouraged to attend this BOF. Jeremy George, Director of
the Advanced Networking Group for Information Technology Services at Yale
University, will get the discussion started by making a presentation on the
elements of integrated communications and how they interrelate. For further information, contact Jeremy George at <jeremy.george@yale.edu>.

Missouri Life Sciences Week, March 3-7
Missouri Life Sciences Week, March 3-7, will focus on life sciences and
biotechnology with the goal of promoting communication and collaboration
throughout Missouri's scientific community and beyond. Doug Van Houweling,
Internet2 President and CEO, will provide introductory remarks at the
opening session. Life Sciences Week presentations will take place in three
different locations in Missouri, with Internet2 providing interactive
videoconferencing between the three sites. In addition, Internet2 will also
be netcasting several sessions for general viewing, including the March 7
panel discussion "Science Education for the 21st Century" which will be
presented as part of the Internet2 Virtual Briefing series. Life Sciences
Week will also feature a virtual poster session for online viewing, in
addition to the live poster session at the MU campus. Gary Allen, Executive
Director of the University of Missouri Bioinformatics Consortium and Chair
of the Internet2 Veterinary Medicine Special Interest Group, is one of the
co-organizers for this event.
Missouri Life Sciences week is presented by the University of
Missouri-Columbia MU Molecular Biology Program and University of Missouri
Bioinformatics Consortium, in partnership with the Stowers Institute for
