New World Symphony Workshop and Symposium, March 28 & 29

Internet2 and the New World Symphony are hosting a two-day event (at the

New World Symphony campus on Miami Beach) to introduce educators and

technicians from major music schools to the power of high-performance

networking for distance education and music collaboration.

The March 28 Internet2 Performance Production Workshop is designed

primarily for technical personnel supporting schools of music and

performing arts departments involved in producing live performances and

music education events over Internet2. The focus will be on performance

production technologies designed to help members create successful

multi-site, interactive, digital video/audio productions. There is a charge

of $125.00 to attend this event and registration is required.

The March 29 Internet2 Music Education Symposium is geared toward deans,

presidents, administrators and faculty of schools of music. Michael Tilson

Thomas, Artistic Director for the New World Symphony, will talk about the

New World Symphony’s experience with distance education over Internet2. To

demonstrate the power and potential of using Internet2 for real time

interaction in music education, live demonstrations will be presented,

including several master classes with remote participants.

There is no charge for this event, but registration is required.

In addition, participants will be treated to an encore presentation of

USC's Integrated Media Systems Center 10.2 immersive audio demonstration

that wowed the audience at the Internet2 fall 2002 performance event. This

demo will feature a previously captured performance by the New World

Symphony streamed over Internet2 networks in better-than-broadcast quality,

high-definition digital video projected on a specially made 30 by 17 foot

screen and 10.2 multichannel immersive audio.

Those attending the March 28 Workshop are welcome to stay for March 29

Symposium. Saturday evening, March 29, all will be treated to a reception

and live New World Symphony concert at the Lincoln Theatre conducted by

Maestro Thomas.

NSF Experimental Infrastructure Network Solicitation

NSF has released a solicitation entitled "Experimental Infrastructure

Network" (EIN), with a due date of May 8th for proposal submissions. This

solicitation seeks compelling research and education applications that

require services not available from leading edge production networks such

as Abilene. Abilene, however, could play a role in providing isolated

capacity for separate network paths that could be allocated for

experimental applications. In addition, there are plans for acquiring

lightpaths (i.e., optical links) within the period of this new NSF program

that could be applied toward the goals of the solicitation. We believe this

solicitation is important, as it will help define and motivate the next

generation of end-to-end services and applications that will run across

Internet2 networks.

If you are working on a response to this solicitation, have challenging

applications experiments in mind, and are interested in seeing if your

application could take advantage of Abilene's testbed capabilities, please

contact Ted Hanss at <ted@internet2.edu> and 734.913.4256 or Steve Corbató

at <corbato@internet2.edu> and 734.352.7006. We are open to exploring how

Abilene's capabilities can support proposals involving member universities,

corporations, and affiliates. For example, we could exploit large MTU sizes

(greater than 9K), IP quality of service, and experimental protocols to

enhance application performance.

If you have plans to respond to NSF's solicitation, please contact us by

March 28.

Internet2 Commons Site Coordinator Training, March 26-27

Internet2 Commons Site Coordinator Training will be held in conjunction

with the SURA/ViDe Digital Video Workshop in Atlanta on March 26-27. Each

university that wishes to participate in the Internet2 Commons worldwide

videoconferencing service must designate a qualified campus site

coordinator. This training will be taught by nationally recognized

professionals in digital videoconferencing. Hands-on training with

equipment will be included. Some of the training topics include:

- Audio and video basics

- Room/environments conditions for videoconferences

- Operating and troubleshooting procedures common to videoconferencing systems

In addition to the Atlanta training, two international sessions are being

offered. Site Coordinator Training will be held in Singapore on April 5

(following the ARPUNet Distance Learning and the Internet Conference) and

again in Zagreb on May 18 (preceding the TERENA Networking Conference).

There is a fee of $100 for the training. A detailed agenda and online

registration is available at the following URL:
