Fall 2003 Internet2 Member
Meeting Call for Demos
Internet2 is soliciting
advanced networking applications demonstrations for
the Fall 2003 Internet2 Member
Meeting, 13-16 October in
IN. The fall member meeting will offer multiple
venues and opportunities
for demonstrations. One set of demos will run 13-15 October at
the
Indianapolis Marriott
Downtown, location of the fall member meeting. In
addition, demonstrations will also
take place in conjunction with an
evening gala reception, which will
be held at the
15 October. The museum demo venues include an IMAX
Theatre and the Dean &
Barbara
White Auditorium.
For the IMAX Theatre venue we would welcome one
to two interesting
applications that take advantage of the IMAX technology,
either by using the theater to
project your own content or providing
content for projection in IMAX
format. For the Dean & Barbara White
Auditorium, we are
soliciting one to two arts and humanities related
applications that are performance
oriented. Internet2 university members,
corporate members, affiliate members,
and international partners are all
invited to participate in the
demos. Applications demonstrations from
all
disciplines are welcome. For more information, refer to the call for
demos

Videoconferencing for
Members through the Internet2 Commons
Plan now to take advantage
of Internet2 Commons videoconferencing services
for fall activities through one
of three subscription opportunities for
Internet2 members: Campus,
Community, and Community Plus. The Campus
subscription will support the needs of
campus- or institution-wide
videoconferencing. The Community subscription
will support the needs of
smaller groups, such as departments
within an organization or groups
crossing organizational boundaries.
If no site coordinator is available to
support your videoconferencing, the
Community Plus plan has been developed
to fill that necessary role.
Schedule your fall classes or meeting times
with the conferencing
capabilities of the Internet2 Commons. For more
information, contact Jonathan Tyman Internet2 Manager for Digital Video at
<tyman@internet2.edu>,

The
Internet2/ResearchChannel Digital Video over IP Project
The
Internet2/ResearchChannel Working Group provides a testbed
for the
exploration of high-quality demand and
streaming video applications across
Internet2 advanced networks
and associated campus networks. One
Internet2/ResearchChannel
Working Group collaboration involves exploring
different technologies and methods
for delivering digital video over IP.
Current areas of
experimentation include point-to-point videoconferencing,
multipoint videoconferencing, and
streaming to standard desktop
workstations. Internet2 members
participating in these experiments are
using Comet DVIP cards, provided
by Internet2 corporate member Fujitsu
Laboratories, and DVTS
(Digital Video Transport System) software, provided
by collaborators at the WIDE
project. The Comet (Communication Enterprising
Technology) Project, a
Fujitsu Laboratories initiative, has done extensive
work with Digital Video over IP
systems. The WIDE (Widely Integrated
Distributed Environment)
project provides advanced networking support and
services to Japanese universities.
According to Bob Riddle,
Internet2 Technologist and one of the coordinators
for the Digital Video over IP
Project, "We are impressed with how well our
digital video over IP tests are
going with our project participants so far,
especially a recent test between
"Bob Riddle and I had a
very successful Comet DVIP test drive with
outstanding image/sound quality. We
were connected in seconds and sending
each other 30 Mbps streams. I
have only seen videoconference quality like
that in the past from satellite
videoconferencing via
uplinks/downlinks/transponders requiring many dollars of
technology!"
For more information, or if
you would like to participate, please send
email to Bob Riddle, Internet2
Technologist <bdr@internet2.edu> expressing
your interest.

Lewis & Clark and the
Internet2 Commons
In celebration of the 200th
anniversary of the Lewis & Clark expedition, a
three year long re-enactment is
in progress, retracing the route of these
early American explorers. The
Internet2 Commons will provide H.323
videoconferencing and streaming video
connections via the Internet-to-Go
satellite trailer developed by Bob
Dixon of
OARnet. Live video streams will
document the trip and give students and
others a chance to interact with
the expedition, with Sacagawea's tribe,
and others they will encounter
along the way. The collaboration includes
K-12 schools, Native
American tribes, MOREnet, Apple Computer, Native
American tribes,
and others. For more information about the event, visit
the Apple Learning Interchange.

eVLBI Workshop Summary
The Joint Institute for VLBI
in Europe (JIVE) recently hosted the second
annual eVLBI
Workshop 14-16 May 2003 in Dwingeloo, The
Netherlands. Charles Yun,
Internet2 Program Manager for Science and Engineering, attended the workshop
and made a presentation on Internet2 activities relating to VLBI (Very Long
Baseline Interferometry) and radio astronomy. VLBI is transitioning from tape-based to
magnetic disk (hard drive) to network-based data access and storage. Although tapes served as the long time
standard for VLBI research, hard drive-based storage was only recently
introduced and will soon be supplanted by networks. MIT Haystack is among the early adopters of
networked data transmissions as a result of the eVLBI
tests they ran during 2002 and reported at the first eVLBI
workshop. Following MIT's earlier work,
the network-based approach has moved beyond a proof-of-concept into an
operational model, with the VLBI community as a whole contributing to efforts
and standardization of network-based eVLBI
technologies. Outcomes from the JIVE eVLBI workshop include plans for connectivity tests among

Digital
Digital EMS (DEMS)
integrates several leading-edge technologies to link
emergency medical technicians in
ambulances with trauma specialists in
distant hospitals. The DEMS
ambulance is equipped with state-of-the-art
medical monitoring and wireless
communications technology that provide high
quality data and video to the
trauma specialist at the center. This
capability is especially important in
rural parts of the
where resources are limited. DEMS is part of the Disaster Relief and
Emergency Medical Services
(DREAMS) project, a multi-million dollar
undertaking aimed at improving
emergency medical care. Funded by the
Army Medical Research and
Materiel Command, DREAMS uses technology such as
global positioning system
navigation and real-time, high-bandwidth
transmission of physiological, audio,
and video data to provide emergency
medical professionals access to a
"virtual physician" to assist in the
first response to an injury,
heart attack, stroke, or other trauma. By
providing mentoring and specialized
expertise to emergency personnel in
remote areas patient treatment can
begin during the so-called "golden hour"
immediately following a trauma -- when
the chances of recovery for patients
are the greatest -- rather than
having treatment begin upon arrival at a
medical center. Partners in the
DREAMS project are the
Materiel Command and Texas
Engineering Experiment Station, a member of the
