Fall 2003 Internet2 Member Meeting Demos Announced

Internet2 has announced the advanced networking applications demonstrations

that will be featured at the Fall 2003 Internet2 Member Meeting, 13-16

October in Indianapolis, IN.  One set of demos will run 13-15 October at

the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown, location of the fall member

meeting.  These demos showcase a broad range of technologies and include

participation by university, corporate, affiliate, and international

members.  Several demos will highlight aspects of IP-based interactive

collaboration technologies.  In addition, two performance-oriented

demonstrations will take place in conjunction with an evening gala

reception, which will be held at the Indiana State Museum on 15

October.  According to Ted Hanss, Internet2 Director for Applications

Development, "I'm impressed with the breadth and caliber of the demos we're

featuring this fall. It's also exciting to see so many new applications

incorporating interactive collaboration technologies."  A complete list of

the fall demos can be found on the web page below.

Version 3.0 of Internet2 Detective, a small easy-to-install and use

application that reveals your computer's networking abilities, is now

available.  This version of the Detective incorporates improvements

suggested by feedback from the Internet2 community.  Detective enables you

to determine:

- If a computer can access an Internet2 backbone network

- Whether a computer can receive multicast streams

- What bandwidth is available between any two computers that have the

Detective installed

The Internet2 Detective is available for Microsoft Windows 98/2000/XP and,

as a test version, for Mac OS X. The Internet2 Detective builds on Iperf

and the Multicast Beacon developed by the National Science

NEESgrid Multi-Site Simulation

NEESgrid links earthquake engineering site participants in the NSF-funded

George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES)

project to create a national virtual earthquake engineering laboratory.

Capabilities available to NEES system users include teleobservation and

teleoperation; tools supporting publication to and use of a curated data

repository; access to computational resources and open source analytical

tools; and collaborative tools supporting experiment planning, execution,

analysis and publication. NEESgrid will provide a scalable, extensible

system by integrating experimental, archive, and numeric simulation sites,

which are connected to each other through the Abilene Network. Several

NEESgrid participants are staging a multi-site simulation of a large-scale

experiment combining physical experiments with computational simulation.

During the simulation, a structure will be divided into three parts and

tested at three locations: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

(physical test), University of Colorado at Boulder (physical test), and the

National Center for Supercomputing Applications (computational model).

Simulation participants will use the Abilene Network to demonstrate

NEESgrid's capabilities, including data management services,

teleobservation, teleoperation, and computation and simulation services.

The MOST experiment will take place 30 July 2003 at noon EDT (16.00 UTC).

Please check the MOST web site to find out how you can log in and configure

your browser to watch the experiment.

Security at Line Speed Workshop

Two difficult, and seemingly contradictory, imperatives are facing research

university networking: the need to enhance local network security in the

face of increased local, regional and nationwide cyberprotection needs, and

the requirement to support deployment of high-performance, advanced network

services for campus researchers using distributed computing environments.

The Security at Line Speed Workshop seeks to identify the requirements,

architectures, and best practices needed to guide future network

deployments for the research community. The Security at Line Speed

Workshop, which will take place in Chicago on 11-13 August 2003, is made

possible through an NSF grant and the assistance of the University of

Washington and Indiana University, in partnership with Internet2.

Attendance to the workshop will be limited and is by invitation of the

planning committee only.
