Name Service for Non-UGA Organizations
From time to time, University of Georgia departments provide networked computing resources for non-UGA organizations with which they have a professional affiliation. These resources offer information services for the external organizations such as Web page delivery, FTP file transfer access, and e-mail accounts. Even though the computing resources are located on the UGA campus, it is usually desirable for these non-UGA organizations to advertise their services with a [domain] name that reflects their identity rather than the University's.
Some external organizations have already registered domain names with a Domain Name Registrar. [Note: In order to register a domain name, an organization must supply the Domain Name Registrar (along with other information) the IP addresses of at least two name servers and a technical contact from the Internet service provider (ISP) that is managing name service for the registered domain name.] In this case, it is fairly easy for the ISP to associate a name in an organization's domain with a UGA computing resource. The association, however, must be coordinated with the UGA Network Information Center. It is highly desirable for the domain owner to obtain name service from either the ISP or the Domain Name Registrar.
If the external organization has not registered a domain name with a Domain Name Registrar and cannot identify a name service provider through any of the organization's membership, EITS is willing to provide name service for these organizations under the following conditions:
If all of these conditions can be satisfied, the department head must submit a letter to Dr. David Matthews-Morgan, EITS, 171A Boyd Graduate Studies, CAMPUS 4713 requesting that EITS provide name service for the stated organization and indicating that all of the conditions listed above will be met.
