UGA to commemorate events of Sept. 11, 2001

A number of activities will be held on the University of Georgia campus on Thursday, Sept. 11, to commemorate those who died and the heroic acts of others during the terrorist attacks two years ago. * Members of the UGA Student Government Association will distribute white ribbons on campus throughout the day. * Patriots Day Memorial Ceremony, sponsored by UGA’s Army ROTC, will honor all who suffered a loss as a result of the terrorist attacks and all of the service members who have given their lives in the name of freedom since. The ceremony begins at 8:15 a.m. at the military building at the corner of Baldwin Street and Sanford Drive. (Contact 706/542-0557 or porambo@arotc.uga.edu) * UGA Air Force and Army ROTC cadets will ring the Chapel bell at the times of the four plane crashes: at 8:46 a.m. for American Airlines flight 11, WTC North Tower, New York City; at 9:02 a.m. for United Airlines flight 175, WTC South Tower, New York City; at 9:45 a.m. for American Airlines flight 77, Pentagon; and at 10:03 a.m. for United Airlines flight 93, Shanksville, Penn. * UGA will join the Athens/Clarke community for Community Public Safety Recognition Day and 9/11 Memorial Observance to mark the anniversary of the attacks. A processional of public safety personnel and equipment, an honor guard, bagpipes and other units will begin at 9 a.m. at Clayton and Hull Streets, proceed up Clayton to Thomas and from there to Washington Street, ending with a 9:30 a.m. ceremony on the courthouse steps. Participants include the UGA School of Music, U.S. Navy Supply Corps School color guard and others. Rain location is Foundry Street behind the Classic Center. * The UGA School of Law is hosting a panel discussion from 2 to 3 p.m. titled "9/11 + 2: Legal and Political Ramifications in the Fight Against International Terrorism." The discussion will take place in the Hatton-Lovejoy Courtroom on the second floor of the law school. Panelists include Dan Bodansky , law school; Gabriel Wilner, Dean Rusk Center – International Comparative and Graduate Legal Studies; Nathan Busch, School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA); and Han Park, Center for the Study of Global Issues (GLOBIS). Gilbert Head and Steven Brown, University Archives and Records Management, will be present to facilitate the event.
