Two students in the University of Georgia Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication are among the Top 25 Most Promising Minority Students in the United States according to the American Advertising Federation (AAF).
Alexandria (Zandy) Weems, a fourth-year student from Riverdale and Victoria Rovirosa, a fourth-year student from Miami, Fla., will be featured with the other 23 finalists in the Feb. 10 issue of Advertising Age.
"This is quite a tribute to the hard work and talent of these students, and it is a very nice career launcher for them as well," said Karen King, department head of advertising and public relations. As part of their recognition, Weems and Rovirosa will fly, all expenses paid, to New York in February to network, interview with and be honored by some of the top advertising agencies and advertisers in the country.
"To effectively promote products and services in today's diverse marketplace, the advertising industry needs to increase the number of minorities at all levels of decision making," said King.
Previous members of the Top 25 list are working in the advertising, marketing and communications industries for such employers as NIKE, Leo Burnett Company, Procter & Gamble, The Wall Street Journal, Ebony magazine, The Gap, DDB Worldwide, BBDO, Saatchi & Saatchi and Univision.
Established in 1913, the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication provides seven undergraduate majors: advertising, broadcast news, magazines, newspapers, public relations, publication management and telecommunication arts. In addition, the college offers three graduate degrees and is home to the Peabody Awards, one of the premier award programs in broadcasting and electronic media.
