Athens, Ga. – Matthew Crim, a senior Honors student from Cartersville, has been selected as a 2005 Marshall Scholar. This is the third consecutive year that a University of Georgia student has received this prestigious award to study in the United Kingdom. A 2004 Truman Scholarship recipient, Crim is the first UGA student to win both the Truman and Marshall Scholarships.

Crim will receive both a bachelor of arts in political science and a bachelor of science in cellular biology in May 2005, and beginning in fall 2005, he plans to attend the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). During his two years at the LSHTM, Crim will participate in two one-year master of science programs: public health (health services research) and health policy, planning and financing.

“Matt is an outstanding student scholar and a young man of the highest personal character who clearly belongs among that elite group of the nation’s most accomplished and promising undergraduates,” said UGA President Michael F. Adams. “Having three consecutive Marshall Scholars is a great distinction for UGA, and we are very proud of Matt for the honor this brings to him personally as well as to the university.”

The Marshall Scholarship program was established in 1953 to express the gratitude of the British people to the United States for its role in the Marshall Plan. Each year, the Marshall Scholarships enable up to 40 young Americans of high ability to earn a degree in the United Kingdom in any field of study. The program allows the scholars, who are potential leaders, opinion-formers and decision-makers in their own country, to gain an understanding and appreciation of British values and the British way of life. It also establishes long-lasting ties between the peoples of Britain and the United States.

While attending UGA, Crim has demonstrated excellence in both scholarship and leadership. He is the recipient of the Foundation Fellowship, the university’s most prestigious undergraduate award, and a member of various academic honor societies, including Phi Beta Kappa and Blue Key. Through the Center for International Trade and Security, Crim conducted research on biological and agricultural security with Corrie Brown, professor of veterinary pathology. Currently he works with Rick Tarleton, Distinguished Research Professor of Cellular Biology, to study Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiologic agent of Chagas disease.

“Matt has managed to juggle so many activities and responsibilities at UGA, including undergraduate research in our lab,” noted Tarleton. “He is clearly a unique, multifaceted individual. The Marshall Scholarship will provide the perfect avenue for him to continue his training and exploration of issues in international health. I expect big things from him in the future.”

Outside of the classroom, Crim has made an impact both on and off campus. He serves on the executive council of the University Judiciary and is a member of the Arch Society and Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. Crim currently serves as a student ambassador for the Center for International Trade and Security and recently completed his third year as a peer advisor to first-year Honors students. During the last two summers, he has devoted his time to serving others by volunteering in hospitals in Tanzania and Thailand.

“Matt Crim is an outstanding individual. His accomplishments are truly impressive, and he is very deserving of becoming a Marshall Scholar. I am confident that his experiences in the Honors Program have prepared him well for his upcoming graduate studies and eventual career,” stated David S. Williams, director of the Honors Program. “His award bespeaks the quality of the students in the Honors Program and the superb education they receive from our faculty. I am very pleased with the continued success of our students in major scholarship competitions.”

“I am tremendously honored to have been awarded the Marshall Scholarship,” said Crim. “In London, I will be exposed to issues from different perspectives and learn with students from around the world. I thank the university community and the many mentors and friends that have helped me to this point.”

After completing his two programs of study in London, Crim will return to the United States to enroll in medical school and hopes to pursue a career in public health.
