Athens, Ga. – The 128 students accepted for enrollment this fall in the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy have the highest grade point average (GPA) and the highest Pharmacy College Admissions Test (PCAT) scores of any entering pharmacy class at UGA. GPA scores were 3.7 and the PCAT was 92.5, each a few hundredths of a point above last year’s scores. The applicant pool of 928 for the doctor of pharmacy degree program was also the largest in the college’s history.
Ken Duke, director of admissions for the college, pointed out that the continued increase in the applicant pool is reflective of the students’ desire for acceptance into the program.
“Since we have so few openings for so many applicants, we can maintain a highly competitive program and only accept the best possible applicants. In the long run this helps maintain the superiority of our program and, ultimately, allows us to educate better pharmacists.
He added that test scores are only part of the admissions decision, noting that interviews with applicants are also a major component of the admissions process. “We look for applicants who have good verbal skills and a strong desire for a career in the health care field. We conducted interviews for each of the available positions this year, as has been the case for the past four years,” he said. “We are unable to interview all candidates due to the large applicant pool. But we interview as many applicants as possible when the interview score will make a difference in acceptance.”
Other vital statistics for the class of 2009 are a male-to-female ratio of 38.62 and a racial composition that is 24.7 percent minority, which includes three African American, two multiracial, two Hispanic and 20 Asian students. Twenty-five students have already earned a bachelor of science degree or higher before entering the four-year professional pharmacy program.
