Athens, Ga. – Private giving to the University of Georgia soared to a record high of $96.9 million in the fiscal year that ended June 30, topping the previous year’s total by more than $19 million and pushing the university’s half-billion-dollar campaign to almost $350 million.

This was the fifth consecutive year for record-high private gifts and pledges, and puts UGA on the brink of realizing a long-sought goal of garnering $100 million in private gifts in a single year.

The $96.9 million is a 24 percent increase over last year’s total of $77.8 million. Giving through the annual fund program totaled a record $8.38 million, up from $8.25 million the previous year. Thirteen contributors made gifts or commitments of $1 million or more.

The gifts and pledges helped raise total support for UGA’s Archway to Excellence campaign to a current total of $345.5 million. The university launched the public phase of the $500 million campaign in April after collecting donations in the “quiet phase” for nearly four years.

“This report is simply spectacular, and it clearly demonstrates the University of Georgia’s strong base of support among alumni, friends and other donors throughout Georgia and around the country,” said UGA President Michael F. Adams. “As federal and state support for higher education continues to grow slowly, private donations are what will enable UGA to maintain and enhance excellence in teaching, research and service. We are extremely appreciative to all those who have given so generously to keep UGA strong and healthy.”

Steve Wrigley, senior vice president for external affairs, said last year’s giving is a major boost for the Archway to Excellence campaign. “To have reached this level of support at this stage of the campaign is very gratifying,” Wrigley said. “We know there is tremendous enthusiasm for UGA and the academic programs the campaign supports, and this report gives us every expectation of not only reaching but surpassing the $500 million goal by the time the campaign ends in 2008.”

Robert Hawkins, associate vice president for development, noted that in FY 2000 private gifts and pledges totaled only $48.3 million, less than half of last year’s total. “To have doubled private giving in only five years is remarkable, especially considering the economic downturn during that period,” Hawkins said. “There’s every reason to believe this trend will continue and that we will soon break the $100 million threshold, which will truly be a milestone for fundraising at the University of Georgia.”

Gift receipts last year came from 51,418 contributors. The donors included 28 percent of the graduating class who participated in the Senior Signature Campaign – representing the largest number of gifts ever to this program.

Last year’s total includes $60.4 million for instruction, research and outreach, an increase of more than nine percent from $55.3 million the previous year. These gifts are used to fund scholarships and fellowships for students; recruit outstanding new faculty; provide travel and research support for current faculty; and buy new classroom and lab equipment and books, periodicals and other materials for libraries.

Gifts and pledges for athletic purposes totaled $36.5 million, of which $25.5 million was for seating priority. The total is $14 million more than athletic gifts in the previous year. Athletic gifts are used to support athletic scholarships, the athletic general endowment and other needs.
