UGA College of Education professor Lorilee Sandmann appointed to Carnegie Foundation national advisory panel

Athens, Ga. – University of Georgia College of Education professor Lorilee Sandmann has been appointed to a national advisory panel on higher education’s role in community engagement by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (CFAT).

Sandmann, as associate professor in the Department of Lifelong Education, Administration and Policy, was named as a member of the National Advisory Panel for New Carnegie Elective Classification on Community Engagement.

CFAT’s goal is to increase higher education’s role in society with the community. Engaging the community renews higher education’s civic duty, connecting literature, research, practice, policy and theory that students learn in the classroom to communities outside of school, said Sandmann.

The national advisory panel will review higher education institutions’ applications for classification for community engagement. Since its inception in 1905, CFAT has served the nation as an independent policy and research center to encourage, uphold and dignify the profession of the teacher and the cause of higher education in the United States.

Earlier this year, Sandmann, a national expert on the assessment of institutional engagement and scholarship of faculty engagement, with funding from the Johnson Foundation, led a Wingspread Conference titled Engagement in Higher Education: Building a Federation for Action. This summit of 32 higher education associations, networks and leaders developed a declaration forming the Higher Education Network for Community Engagement (HENCE).

“HENCE calls for immediate collaborative action to address important gaps and next steps critical to community engagement endeavors across the higher education sector,” said Sandmann.

Sandmann came to UGA as associate vice president for Public Service and Outreach and executive director of the Georgia Center for Continuing Education in 2001. She joined the College of Education as a full-time faculty member in 2002. She directs the Clearinghouse and National Review Board for the Scholarship of Engagement.

Prior to coming to UGA, Sandmann served as vice provost for Institutional Effectiveness and Strategic Partnerships at Cleveland State University and served as director of University Outreach at Michigan State University for eight years. She began her career serving in various faculty, administrative, extension and outreach positions at the University of Minnesota for 17 years.
