Former circuit court judge from Kentucky to head UGA's legal affairs unit -- University of Georgia President Michael F. Adams has selected a Kentucky circuit court judge to serve as UGAs executive director of legal affairs.
Adams has appointed Stephen M. Shewmaker, who has served as circuit judge for the 50th Judicial Circuit since 1983, to the position effective Jan. 1, 2000. Shewmaker succeeds acting executive director Jere Morehead, who was named associate provost and director of the Honors Program at UGA in July. Morehead, previously a faculty member in legal studies in UGAs Terry College of Business, had held the legal affairs post since March 1998.

North Korean delegation to visit UGA Nov. 29-30 -- The University of Georgias Center for the Study of Global Issues (GLOBIS) will host a delegation of top government advisers from North Korea who will visit here Nov. 29 and 30. As part of that visit, members of the delegation will join U.S. policy advisers for a public symposium Nov. 29 from 2-5 p.m. in Masters Auditorium of the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. Participants will discuss a new phase in relations between the United States and the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea.

"Cold War" -- Hot Lunch
Peabody Awards and Cinematic Arts host a special presentation of CNNs "Cold War"
The George Foster Peabody Awards and the Cinematic Arts Division of University Union will host a special presentation of CNNs award-winning series "Cold War" over a three-day period beginning Tuesday, Nov. 30 through Thursday, Dec. 2. The presentation is a precursor to former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachevs visit to the University of Georgia on Dec. 3. The three one-hour segments to be shown during this presentation will highlight 1980 through the end of the Cold War and will feature Gorbachev extensively.
The documentary will be shown at noon each day in the Tate Theater in the Tate Student Center at the University of Georgia. Viewers are invited to bring lunch or purchase a meal at the Bulldog Cafe and enjoy the one-hour presentations. The screening is free and open to the public.

Former Soviet President Gorbachev to speak at UGA Dec. 3 -- Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, who helped dissolve Communism in his own country while leading a crusade for global peace, will speak at the University of Georgia Dec. 3. Gorbachev will speak at 7:30 p.m. in Stegeman Coliseum. The speech is open free to the public

$1.3 million bequest from the Kicklighters supports scholarships, Gorbachev visit -- The University of Georgia has received a bequest of about $1.3 million from the estate of the late Reginald and Edna Katherine Kicklighter, a couple whose ties to the university span more than half a century. The bequest will support academic scholarships and fellowships for students, and a portion of the gift will help finance the visit of former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev to UGA on Dec. 3.

Harrick filling the Dawg-house -- Georgia basketball coach Jim Harrick recently announced the signing of Steven Thomas, an all-state player from Carrollton, Ga., to a national letter-of-intent to play basketball next year for the Bulldogs.
Thomas, a 6-8, 225-pound forward, is currently a senior at Carrollton High School and the third Georgia signee of the early national signing period, which began last from Nov. 10-17. Last week, Harrick signed all-state forward Chris Daniels of Monroe High School in Albany and 6-1 guard Rashad Wright of Statesboro, Ga.
