Athens, Ga. – The University of Georgia will officially break ground on Pharmacy South, the $42.9 million, 93,288-square-foot addition to the College of Pharmacy, on Friday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. in the parking lot on the south side of the Robert C. Wilson building. A reception will follow on Brooks Mall.

The new facility will serve the state’s pharmacy needs by accommodating expanded class sizes by 50 to 75 students and will provide much-needed research space, thereby allowing the college to continue its role as the premier school for pharmacy education and research in the state and region. Completion is expected in 2009.

UGA President Michael F. Adams will preside at the groundbreaking event. Dean Svein Řie; Chris Johnson, president of the Dean’s Student Advisory Council; and Hugh Chancy, recipient of the 2006 Distinguished Alumnus Award, will  speak.

In addition to classroom, laboratory, and office space, the expansion will include a Student Learning Center and a Pharmacy Care Center. The Care Center will be a teaching area which will include a community pharmacy, a hospital pharmacy, a sterile products room, an intravenous prep room and multi-purpose skills alcoves used for compounding, patient examinations and patient counseling.
