Athens, Ga. – David Lee, University of Georgia vice president for research, today announced the appointment of Carl Bergmann, Ph.D., as assistant vice president for research in charge of facilities. In his new role, Bergmann will have responsibility for UGA research buildings and laboratories, equipment, repairs and renovations. He will serve as liaison between the Office of the Vice President for Research and the UGA Physical Plant.

Bergmann will continue as director of the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory in Aiken, S.C., a role that he assumed in 2007. He is also facilities director for the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center on the UGA campus in Athens, where he has served since 1990.

Bergmann has been an associate research scientist at the CCRC since 1986 and also is affiliated with UGA’s Cancer Center, where his research focuses on how proteins and negatively charged carbohydrate chains interact with cells to influence tumor growth and metastasis.

“In this new capacity, Carl’s priorities will be to maximize the value of OVPR and major repair and renovation investments in scientific research facilities and infrastructure, and to make sure these precious dollars go as far as possible,” Lee said.

“Carl is ideally suited for this role because he combines an understanding of science with interest in and knowledge of engineering systems and hardware,” Lee added. “He also has excellent contacts with Physical Plant and off-campus contractors, gained through his well recognized efforts to ensure the quality of the new CCRC. This is a highly unusual combination and so we are especially pleased to have the benefit of Carl’s involvement.”
