The channel line-up on the University Cable system will change effective July 1 in an effort to provide more logical groupings of similar programming. Two channels are being added and none dropped in the rearrangement, says Jay Harriman, associate director of the Office of Instructional Support and Development. University Cablevision serves more than 4,000 customers across campus, including nearly all on-campus student residences, hotel rooms of the Georgia Center for Continuing Education, plus classrooms, offices, laboratories and athletic facilities requiring the service for official use. It is our hope and expectation that faculty, students and staff will find these groupings more convenient and logical, Harriman says. For instance, all foreign language channels will be grouped in channels 51 through 57, while all local area broadcast stations will be grouped in channels 2 through 11, most matching their over-the-air frequency. Children living in Family Housing will find the UGA Family Housing Channel moving from 9 to 31, so that it is adjacent to Nickelodian (32) and other family-oriented channels, he adds. Established channel identity dictates that Housing Channel 12 and University Channel 15 remain on those respective channels. The University Channel is simulcast on channel 15 of Clarke-Oconee Charter cable system. Chinese and Russian language channels are being added based on policies approved by the University Cable Advisory Board to add channels which support a major program of study or a significant portion of international students living on campus. Program service changes are approved by the advisory board based on input from faculty, staff and student representatives, taking into account available budget and channel capacity. The board is comprised of representatives from OISD, housing, journalism, UCNS, telephone services, Georgia Center, Provosts office, public affairs, and at-large representatives of the faculty and student housing residents. |
