DOCUMENTING DESEGREGATION

As part of the 40th anniversary commemoration of the desegregation of the University of Georgia, an exhibit of photographs from the archives of the Associated Press/Wide World Photos and Bettmann/Corbis will be displayed on campus.

The dozen photographs included were shot by various news photographers during the uneasy times of the desegregation of the Athens campus in January 1961 by Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter (now Hunter-Gault). The exhibit was assembled by Peter Frey, a photographer in the University Communications office and the Columns photo editor.

The exhibit will be on display Jan. 9 in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center. That evening, the exhibit will be among the displays at a student-organized commemoration event that begins at 7 p.m. in Georgia Hall of the Tate Student Center.

The following morning, the photo exhibit will move to the upper level of the Tate Student Center, where the display will continue through Jan. 17. It will then move to other locations on campus:
Jan. 18–31: Georgia Center for Continuing Education, atrium outside Masters Hall
Feb. 1–14: Ramsey Student Center atrium
Feb. 15–March 1: Holmes-Hunter Academic Building, Honors Program area
