PEABODY AWARDS FACT SHEET 1999
- The Peabody Awards recognize outstanding achievement in broadcasting and cable. Entries may include programs produced for radio, television, cable or alternative distribution, including corporate, educational and home-video release. However, programs produced and intended for theatrical motion picture exhibition are not eligible for a Peabody Award.
- The Peabody Awards have been administered by the University of Georgia's Henry W. Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication since 1940. Telecommunications professor Barry Sherman is director of the awards program. Selected university faculty and students assist with pre-screening of entries.
- Judging of award winners is done by a 15-person National Advisory Board, which meets at the University of Georgia in March for four days of intensive deliberations. Board members include TV critics, broadcast and cable industry executives, and experts in culture and fine arts.
- The Peabodys differ from other industry awards because they are given solely on the basis of merit, rather than within designated categories. Awards can go to prime-time dramas and comedies, as well as news programs, public affairs documentaries and children's programming.
- Winning a Peabody isn't easy. Though the judges are under no restrictions on the number of annual winners, to date no more than 35 awards have ever been given in any one year. More than 1,000 entries have been received in each of the last seven years. There were 1,270 entries and 33 winners this year.
- The awards are named for George Foster Peabody (1852-1938), a Georgia native who became a New York banker and philanthropist.
- All entries become a permanent part of the Peabody Archive in the University of Georgia Libraries. The collection is one of the nation's oldest, largest, and most-respected moving-image archives.
- This year's awards ceremony is Monday, May 17, at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York.
