UGA SCHOOL OF MUSIC WELCOMES DISTINGUISHED COMPOSER FOR RESIDENCY

ATHENS, Ga. - The University of Georgia School of Music will present two free concerts and one free lecture in honor of composer Takehito Shimazu during his upcoming residency at the School of Music. The first performance, a program featuring Shimazu’s own works, will be Thursday, Sept. 23 at 8:00 p.m. The second performance, a program of student works, will be Friday, Sept. 24 at 6:30 p.m. Both performances will take place in the Roger and Phyllis Dancz Center for New Music, located on the second floor of UGA's School of Music.

Takehito Shimazu will also present a lecture titled "Possibilities of Contemporary Music for Traditional Instruments." Presented as part of the UGA Center for Humanities and Arts Distinguished Lecturer Series, this free lecture will begin at 1:20 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24 in the Robert G. Edge Recital Hall of the School of Music.

Takehito Shimazu, a professor of music at the National Fukushima University in Japan, began his studies in composition at Tokyo-Gakugei University with S. Kai and S. Sumitani. He also attended the Technical University of Berlin as a student of Isang Yun. Shimazu has been awarded many prizes in international competitions including the Young Composers Week in Hilchenbach, Germany; the International Wieniawski Composition Competition in Poland; the prestigious Hambach Prize; and the Special Prize of Japanese Culture Ministry for Theater Arts. His music has been selected four times for performance at the annual International Computer Music Conference.

Shimazu is one of three scholars invited by the UGA Center for Humanities and Arts to be part of the fall semester Distinguished Lecturer Series. Funds for his residency have been provided in part by the UGA Center for Humanities and Arts, the UGA School of Music, Student Composers for the Research of Electro-Acoustic Music, and the College of Arts and Science’s Student Activity Fund Allocation Committee.
