His presentation, titled "Retheorizing Alternative Media," is open to the public. "Dr. Atton's work concerns a central activity of social and political movements of all stripes," said Jay Hamilton, assistant professor in the department of advertising/public relations. "Media are used all the time to advocate for social causes, yet few if any people have considered whether there might be other forms of alternative media that might make more of a difference." Atton is lecturer in information and media in the department of print media, publishing and communication at Napier University in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he teaches undergraduate and graduate courses including journalism, librarianship and publishing. Atton is both a researcher in radical and alternative media and an advocate for its increased visibility and recognition in the political and cultural life of our society. He has spoken widely in Europe and North America and published many papers on this subject. His first book, "Alternative Literature: A Practical Guide for Librarians" (Gower, 1996), was critically acclaimed in the United States and the United Kingdom. In 1998, Atton was presented with the American Library Association's prestigious Eubanks Award "in recognition of his outstanding achievements in promoting alternative media." His articles have been published in Media, Culture & Society; Libri; and Index on Censorship and Libertarian Education, among others. Atton is currently writing a second book, "Media on the Margins; The Alternative Press and Social Change," to be published by Sage. Atton's visit is sponsored by the department of advertising and public relations; the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication; and the Cox Center for International Mass Communication Training and Research. ### |
