UGA CHARGES CHI PHI FRATERNITY WITH HAZING

ATHENS, Ga. -- The University of Georgia has charged Chi Phi fraternity with hazing and other organizational violations of the conduct code and has placed the chapter on interim suspension pending a formal hearing. In addition, effective April 17, the UGA Interfraternity Council suspended Chi Phi from IFC for a period of two years "pending the truthfulness of the allegations."

The UGA chapter was placed on interim suspension on April 13 pending further investigation. On Thursday, acting director of judicial programs Daniel Pugh notified Chi Phi officials of the formal charges. A hearing has been set for Monday, May 1 at 3:30 p.m. in room 306 of the Academic Building.

The three charges include hazing, engaging in obscene or indecent conduct, and failing to comply with administrative policies. The interim suspension means the fraternity may conduct no organized activities. Members living in the chapter house at 290 South Lumpkin Street may remain there pending a resolution of the charges.

The allegations stem from an incident in January 1998 in which the Chi Phi chapter at Georgia Tech is alleged to have brought its pledge class to UGA's Chi Phi chapter, where some 30 members of the local chapter are said to have engaged in acts of hazing against the Georgia Tech Chi Phi pledges. The matter was brought to the attention of UGA officials last week by their counterparts at Georgia Tech, who recently took disciplinary action against the Tech Chi Phi chapter.

At the time of the alleged offense, UGA's Chi Phi chapter already was serving a four-year probation from 1995. Additionally, in fall 1999 Chi Phi was found to be responsible for a keg party where alcohol was provided by a pledge trainer and for the public drunkenness of an underaged pledge for whom alcohol was purchased at a downtown bar by a member of the fraternity. As a result of the 1999 incident, the chapter was continued on probation.
