HAWKINS NAMED ASSOCIATE V.P. FOR DEVELOPMENT AT UGA

ATHENS, Ga. -- Robert S. Hawkins, who has led development staffs and helped conduct capital campaigns at two universities, has been named to direct the University of Georgia’s private fund-raising programs.

Hawkins will join UGA Nov. 1 as associate vice president for development, a new senior-level position in UGA’s development office in which he will be responsible for managing all development activities.

Hawkins is currently assistant vice president for development at the California Institute of Technology. Previously he worked 19 years at the Georgia Institute of Technology, including three years as executive director for development.

While at Georgia Tech, he worked in a capital campaign that raised $202 million in the 1980s, and he was also involved in Tech’s current $600 million campaign that is expected to end in December. At Caltech, he has worked in a $100 million mini-campaign for the biological sciences.

Kathryn Costello, UGA’s senior vice president for external affairs, said Hawkins’ extensive experience and strong record of success will be valuable as UGA prepares for a capital campaign.

"Robert not only brings a deep and thorough understanding of the mechanics and techniques of fund-raising, but he also possesses the work ethic and human relations skills to train and lead our develolpment staff to be even more productive and successful," Costello said.

"His familiarity with the state of Georgia and the University System of Georgia will be extremely important as he helps lay the groundwork for our future fund-raising endeavors."

While he will engage in some direct fund-raising, Hawkins’ main job will be day-to-day management of UGA’s development staff, Costello said. The staff includes about 16 professional development officers in the central development office, and 18 professionals who work in academic schools and colleges and other university units.

Hawkins’ duties will include strategic planning, training and overall leadership for the development program, which includes the annual fund and gifts from corporate and foundation sources and individual donors.

Hawkins has had similar responsibilities at Caltech, where he has been since 1998. In addition to directing all development programs and managing the staff, he also oversaw the conversion to a new fund-raising information system.

Previously he was at Georgia Tech from 1979-1997. From 1994 to 1997, he was executive director for development--also a position with duties similar to his new UGA post. Before that, he was associate director and director of corporate and foundation relations, and held several positions in the Georgia Tech Research Institute.

Hawkins attended North Carolina State University, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the industrial engineering school. He worked two years as an engineering and audit representative for private industry before joining the Georgia Tech Research Institute.

In the last fiscal year, UGA raised a total of about $44.5 million in private contributions and pledges. The money came from a record-high 49,043 donors, and included $6.6 million raised through the annual fund program--a 20 percent increase in annual fund giving over the previous year.
