ADAMS VISITS WHITE HOUSE JULY 12 FOR SCIENCE DAY 2000 ATHENS, Ga. -- UGA President Michael F. Adams will be among a select delegation of presidents of major research universities who will visit the White House July 12 to lobby for increased federal investment in university-based research. The meeting, hosted by John Podesta, President Clintons chief of staff, is part of Science Day 2000 activities organized by The Science Coalition. Adams is scheduled to meet with Podesta and other senior administration officials, including Jack Lew, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, and Neal Lane, Clintons science advisor. Adams and other university leaders will encourage the president to support a double-digit increase in the FY2001 budget for the National Science Foundation, and to continue a strong commitment to research funding for other federal agencies including NIH, NASA and the Departments of Agriculture and Energy. In addition to Adams, the group of presidents includes: o Molly Corbett Broad, president of the University of North Carolina o William Brody, president of Johns Hopkins University o J. Wade Gilley, president of the University of Tennessee o William Greiner, president of SUNY Buffalo o Shirley Strum Kenny, president of SUNY Stony Brook o Hunter Rawlings, president of Cornell University o George Rupp, president of Columbia University o James Stukel, president of the University of Illinois o Eugene Trani, president of Virginia Commonwealth University o Charles M. Vest, president of MIT o John A. White, chancellor of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville More than 150 scientists and graduate students from universities across the country are expected to participate in Science Day 2000, which includes meetings with congressional leaders and state congressional delegations. The University of Georgia was selected as one of a small group of schools to provide a Capitol Hill exhibit as part of Science Day 2000.
