FISHER HONORED AT UGA SCHOOL OF LAW GRADUATION

ATHENS, Ga. – Julia J. Fisher, a May 2003 graduate of the University of Georgia School of Law, has received the law school’s Ellen Jordan Award for Public Interest Law. The award recognizes exceptional commitment to and achievement in the practice of public interest law. It is named for the late Ellen Jordan, a former UGA law professor and associate dean who also served as associate vice president for academic affairs at the university.

During her time in law school, Fisher took part in several of the school’s public interest programs. For four semesters, she participated in the public interest practicum and was a fellow in the initiative last summer. She also served in the school’s Family Violence Clinic. Her other law school activities included serving as vice president of the Women’s Law Student Association, chair of the Edith House Lecture Committee, board member of the Equal Justice Foundation, investigator and prosecutor in Honor Court proceedings and member of the Legacy 2003 Committee responsible for raising money for the law school. In addition, she was a member of the UGA Women’s Ultimate Frisbee team that won the national college championship during her first year of law school.

"I can attest that our winner is bright, articulate, prepared and ready to be a superb attorney," said one of Fisher’s former professors.

Born in Kalamazoo, Mich., Fisher is a 1996 graduate of the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science. She earned her bachelor’s degree in policy studies and sociology at Rice University. She is currently pursuing a career in public interest law.
