Statement by President Michael F. Adams regarding the fire at the Main Library

We are distressed at the news that the fire was intentionally set. The investigation is in the appropriate hands and the University will support it in any way we can. This finding makes us even more thankful that no one was injured, that major fire damage was contained to one floor of the building, and that the special collections in other parts of the building escaped harm.

The University of Georgia is particularly appreciative of the excellent support provided by members of the community since this incident began. We are grateful to the fire, emergency and volunteer services that responded so quickly and effectively. Our great confidence in the quality of such services in Athens was reaffirmed by Wednesday's response.

Specifically, we thank the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department, the Winterville Fire Department, the Oconee County Fire Department, St. Mary's Hospital, the American Red Cross, the State Fire Marshal's Office and the numerous UGA staff from many departments who responded to the scene.

All of us at the University of Georgia are grateful for the professionalism and dedication of these fine persons.
