In 1992, the 40-year old Reed Hall was in need of renovation as the facility no longer met the living needs and requirements of its residents. Student were demanding more privacy and control over their environment. Architects studied housing facilities throughout the country, students gave suggestions on what should be included in the dorm and administrators contributed both ideas and money to the project. Plans were developed, and the building was closed in 1996 just prior to the Centennial Olympic Games. Renovation began in June 1997 and was completed in August 1998. Residents moved into the new Reed Hall in August 1998. The reconstruction cost $10.4 million.
