RULES AND REGULATIONS

Revised 2002.10.2

Rules and regulations pertaining to use of NMR instruments are as follows. If you have any questions about them, or would like to receive training in the use of the NMR equipment, please contact Dr. Greg Wylie in Room 376.

Access to NMR Facility

1. Every person who wants to use a spectrometer must be explicitly authorized to do so by the NMR Facility staff. This "explicit authorization" will include a check-out test in which the person demonstrates to NMR staff that he/she can use the spectrometer in question, without assistance from another person, and without endangering either themselves or the spectrometer. Unauthorized use of the spectrometers will result in suspension of, or refusal to grant, user privileges.
2. All NMR tubes should be 8in in length and 5mm OD. Only Wilmad 528-PP-8 (precision tube 8 in), WG-1241-8 (economy tube 8 in) or better NMR tubes, or their equivalent, are approved for use in this NMR Facility. Tubes must be kept externally CLEAN! The "thrift" NMR is not allowed in any of the NMR spectrometers. In addition, any NMR tube which does not fit properly into the spinner turbine is not allowed. We strongly recommend the use of Wilmad 535PP tubes for Varian Inova500, Wilmad 528PP tubes for Varian MercuryPlus 400. The use of a substandard and/or dirty NMR tube can damage the NMR spectrometer's probe. Probe damage and instrument downtime resulting from the use of a substandard NMR tube will be charged to the research group responsible for the damage. Use of substandard and/or dirty NMR tubes in the spectrometers will result in suspension of user privileges.
3. Metal objects are NOT allowed in any of NMR labs. Bringing metal objectives such as keys, tools close to magnets could seriously damage the magnets.
4. Food and drink are not allowed in any of NMR labs.
5. No one is allowed to wear lab gloves when operating NMR instrument.

Reservation of NMR Time for the 500 MHz.

1. NMR users reserving time need to go to http://faces.ccrc.uga.edu/ using group name UGACHEM_NMR. Username and password can be obtained by sending a request to Dr. Wylie. You must have a UGA email address in order to have an access to the NMR schedule system.
2. The minimum block of time an operator may reserve is 20 minutes. This is also the minimum amount of time for which the operator's research group will be charged.
3. NMR users must start work no later than fifteen minutes after the beginning of their reserved time, otherwise their entire reservation will revert to open time. NMR users may not run over more than ten minutes into another user's reservation. NMR users who repeatedly inconvenience others by running late and/or not using their reserved time will be denied use of the NMR facility.

Reservation of NMR Time for the 400 MHz.

1. The 400 spectrometer is available as a 'walk-up' instrument with no reservation needed. This 'walk-up' usage will be restricted to 35 minutes per submission between the hours of 8am and 9pm. After 9pm there is no time restriction for Walk-up usage will be unavailable during periods of instrument maintenance and training.

NMR Training

1. Training of new NMR users will be provided by NMR Manager. Please visit NMR homepage at www.uga.edu/nmr and click on Training for more information.
2. A new NMR user must read and understand the "Rules and Regulations" (this document) to be authorized to use NMR equipment at the NMR Facility.
3. It is highly recomended that users take the NMR course that is offered in the Fall semestar.
