The College Board and the Advanced Placement Program sponsor the College Board Fellows Program which has provided over 1000 AP Summer Teaching Institute fellowships to teachers working primarily with minority students or in schools located in economically disadvantaged areas.
During the school year, one- and two-day workshops serve experienced AP teachers to update their subject information, often introducing new teaching methods and resources. Every year, several hundred of these workshops are organized throughout the country by College Board Regional Office representatives. These intensive learning experiences are intended primarily to assist teachers in preparing and teaching their AP courses, but the workshops also help to build networks of AP teachers within disciplines, especially in states that have advanced placement councils.
When colleges host AP institutes and workshops, they are helping themselves as well as their high school colleagues. The positive impressions of the faculty and institutions that teachers carry home can influence teachers' recommendations for student applications to college. More generally, colleges that support AP programs, including teacher preparation programs, contribute to elevating the overall level of high school academic standards and help teachers remain current in and committed to their disciplines.
