Travel License to Cuba
The Cuban Assets Control Regulations were issued by the U.S. Government in 1963
against Cuba. These regulations are still in force today, and they restrict
travel to Cuba except for certain individuals. The University of Georgia has a
special license that authorizes travel for educational activities to any student
or employee affiliated with UGA. The Office of International Affairs administers
these licenses. Please allow at least three weeks for your application and
license to be processed.
In order to apply for the license, you must make yourself familiar with the
Regulations. You may pick up a hard copy of the regulations in Suite 400 Bank of America Building,
call 425-3154 to have them sent to you or
download them from the web site of the Office
of Foreign Assets Control in Adobe PDF format.
After reading these regulations, you must do the following:
- Fill out an application completely, obtain all appropriate signatures
and submit it to Rosemary Max in Suite 400 Bank of America Building.
Download application.
- If you are a student, obtain a letter from the registrar stating that you
are a full-time student and submit it with your application. You must also
submit supporting materials for your travel to Cuba. This could be a letter
of invitation or a letter of support from a department head or dean on your
research.
The Associate Provost of International Affairs makes the final approval of applications to travel to Cuba. If approved, she will sign a notarized letter stating that this license and your status at UGA are true. You MUST carry this notarized letter with a photocopy of the UGA license with you at all times while traveling in Cuba.
If a group of individuals is going to Cuba, only one application is needed. Please appoint one responsible person to be in charge of the application, and include his/her name on the "list of all participants traveling to Cuba". This person will distribute the notarized letters and copies of the UGA license to each individual.
Call Sandy Haagen at 425-3154 with any questions. She will also be happy to mail hard copies of the application and regulations to you.
Note: The Office of International Affairs administers this license only. We do not have information on how to obtain a visa or other travel-related issues to Cuba.
