Initiating the Permanent Residency Process

OIE-ISSIS is here to help the sponsoring department determine the best way to process a request for permanent residency for an international employee. In order to be able to provide complex and accurate information related to each specific case the sponsor and applicant will need to finish read the information regarding PR Process. You are welcome to e-mail prhelp@uga.edu if you have any questions regarding this information.

After you have read the PR information, please go to the forms section and download the Permanent Residency Initial Packet. Use the Initiation Checklist to prepare your files. Send the collected documents to:
Mary Ann Kelly
Director Permanent Residency and Outreach
Office of International Education
110 E. Clayton Street, 4th Floor, Bank of America Building
Athens, GA 30602-2407
Once this initial information has been analyzed and a determination made on which path to follow, the individual and department will both be notified and a meeting will be scheduled to discuss the best option.

A representative from the department will be required to accompany the alien to this meeting. This person will act as a liaison to our office and primary point of contact as we guide the sponsoring Department through the various procedures required by the Department of Labor and USCIS. The PR process is employer based and the applicant should not be involved unless specifically requested to provide information required for the application.

All applicants will be asked in their initial interview if they have any issues or problems that could have a negative impact on their application for permanent residency. Should this be the case the individual may be advised to seek an outside attorney for assistance at their own expense.

Please note: These procedures are specific to the process used to file petitions through sponsorship by the University of Georgia. Information contained herein should not be considered valid for people filing applications that are NOT University sponsored. The OIE-ISSIS is the only office on campus to have signature authority for any federal documents related to permanent residency. The State Attorney General especially has prohibited the signing of form G-28 Notice of Entry of Appearance as Attorney or Representative.
