Phone Numbers

  • Calls outside of Athens may be considered to be long distance, even if they are within the same area code.

  • Calls to 1-800 numbers are free

    • DO NOT Confuse 1-800 numbers with 1-900 numbers. These 900 numbers can be very expensive. They can range in price from $2 to more than $50 per minute.
  • The Athens telephone directory has a phone listing for Athens and surrounding areas.
  • For directory assistance you can call 411 to find any business or person in any city. There is a charge for this service. Or you can call 1-800-FREE-411 without paying a charge.
  • For UGA Phone book listing call UGA Directory 706-542-3000 or www.uga.edu
  • Unfortunately, the UGA campus no longer had public pay phones anymore. However, there are a few phones in campus buildings for on campus and local calls; one of these phones is located at the Information Desk in third floor Tate Student Center.

Skype

  • Skype is an online service that allows you to speak to friends and family around the world for free to other people who use Skype of low rates to telephone lines.

Calling Cards

  • Telephone calling cards allow the holder of the card to charge phone calls (both domestic and international) to the card. To inquire about obtaining a calling card, see the card against the balance of the card, which is pre-paid when the card was bought. These cards are helpful if you need to make a call when you are away from home or only have access to a public telephone.
  • “Telephone Companies” under the yellow pages or call telephone companies like AT&T, MIC or Sprint. Be careful with this card – make sure you know the interest rate for the card.
  • Sam’s Club and Wal-Mart also offer different calling cards that are available in stands located by the cashiers.

10-10 Numbers

  • 10-10-220 and 10-10-345, offer the second cheapest rates for long distance services, after phone cards. These numbers allow you to make a call by first dialing the toll free 10-10 number and then dialing the number you are trying to reach. 10-10 numbers differ from prepaid cards by charging after you call through your regular monthly phone bill. Unlike using phone cards, you will need to pay taxes for calls made using the 10-10 numbers. To compare 10-10 phone rates, go to: http://1010phonerates.com

Telemarketing

  • This is when businesses contact you to try to sell you one of their products, usually credit cards. They talk very fast and try not to give you a chance to say no. Make sure you make an effort to interrupt them and say NO, also remember to tell them to remove you off their calling list.
