Driver's License

While you can use your international driver’s license to drive in the U.S. for the first 12 months you are here, you will find it is much easier to have a driver’s license issued to you by the state of Georgia. In the U.S. driver’s licenses are used for identification purposes so you will use it quite often and it will reduce the cost of your car insurance.

Georgia Driver Licenses can be obtained at the Georgia State Patrol Office on Highway 29 North. While there you must first take a written test for a cost of $10.00. After passing this test you should schedule a driving test. Once you pass this test you can obtain your license for a fee of $20.00.

The following documents should be taken with you to both tests:

  1. Social Security card (or denial letter from social security office if you are not eligible for a card).
  2. Passport
  3. I-94 card
  4. Proof of residence in the state of Georgia such as:
    1. Bank Statement showing your Georgia address
    2. Current Lease agreement
    3. Employer verification
    4. Current utility bill (i.e.: water, electricity or gas)

For more information about obtaining your Georgia driver’s license you can visit the Georgia Department of Driver Services web page at http://www.dds.ga.gov or call them at 866-754-3687 or 678-413-8400.
