Security number for the purposes of filing taxes. The Social Security number
is used by the U.S. Government to identify wage earners for tax purposes.
You should wait until you have been in the U.S. at lease ten days
before applying for a social security number. This will allow for enough time for your
immigration information to be entered into the system, which is then verified by
the social security office. You will need to have the following in order to apply
for a social security number:

- DS-2019

Take the above to the Social Security Administration (SSA) Office at 355 E. Hancock St.
(behind the courthouse, downtown Athens), Monday – Friday from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm
(closed on Federal Holidays). You will be required to fill out an application form.
After completing the application you will be given a receipt. If one isn’t given to you,
you should ask for it. You can use this receipt to call 1-800-772-1213 two business
days after you submit your application to get your social security number via
computerized phone message. The official card will arrive in the mail about 10 days
later.
