Degree Seeking Students |
|
A J-1 exchange student or non-degree seeking student may apply for Academic Training work permission for a maximum period of 3 months after the completion of the J-1 program (i.e. summer vacation).
|
Academic Training cannot be authorized for a period longer than the total period of study. The maximum period is 18 months (unless your period of study was less than 18 months). Ph.D. students who are offered a Post-Doctoral position may be authorized for 18 months of AT and can request a second 18 month period for a total of 36 months of post-doctoral training. |
Academic Training Application Process
The student considering applying for Academic
Training will need to obtain a job offer in a position related to their
field of study or exchange objective. The job offer letter must be included
with the
J-1 academic training application and must be on business
letterhead and include proposed job title, name of supervisor, location of
the employment, proposed start and end dates of employment, and salary.
If the training is unpaid then financial documents showing that you or your
sponsor can cover the cost of living expenses for the period of the extension
will need to be included in the application. The application requires the
student’s major professor complete a portion of the application verifying
that they believe the employment being offered will provide a good training
experience for the student and is relevant to the exchange objective.
The J-1 student should submit the above documents to the OIE, 110 E. Clayton Street, 4th Floor, Bank of America Building,
a minimum of 2 weeks before employment is to begin.
