Current Students - Maintaining Your Status

SEVIS, The Student & Exchange Visitor Information System, is an electronic database of information about F/J students studying in the U.S. The OIE advisors are required to keep accurate data in SEVIS on all current UGA F/J students. There are some important activities that are common to students that must be reported in SEVIS and are essential to maintaining a valid F/J status.

Rights & Responsibilities of all F/J students at UGA:
  • You must be enrolled in a full course of study each Fall and Spring semester at UGA (Graduate students = 9 hours, Undergraduate students = 12). If you drop below a full course of study you will violate your visa status. A student, in limited circumstances, can obtain permission to be enrolled less than full-time. Check with an advisor first!
  • You cannot work outside of the UGA campus without permission from the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). If you work outside of the UGA campus without permission you will violate your visa status.
  • If you change your living address, you must inform UGA through the OASIS system immediately. OIE will then inform the USCIS of your address change. If you don’t inform UGA of your address change you will violate your visa status.
  • If you violate your F-1 or J-1 visa status, the United States government will consider you to be here illegally. Once illegal, you could be subject to arrest or deportation.
OIE is here to assist you with the above rules and responsibilities of your visa status. Your international student advisor will answer any questions you have about your visa status.
