Current Students - Other Immigration/Visa Information
Mandatory Health Insurance
All F-1 and J-1 students are required to have insurance under the Georgia Board of Regents
mandatory policy. Detailed information about the UGA required insurance policy, premiums and
waiver process can be found on the University of Georgia Health Center web site at
http://www.uhs.uga.edu/insurance/index.html.
Enrollment and payment
Each F-1/J-1 student will be automatically enrolled in the mandatory policy each semester of enrollment. Undergraduate students and graduate students without an assistantship will see the charge on their students account after enrolling in classes.
Graduate students with an assistantship, fellowship, or departmental training grant (as employees of the university) will see that the insurance premium is deducted from 3 months pay. In the fall the deduction will occur in September, October, and November. In the spring semester the deduction will be taken from the February, March and April paycheck.
Waive the mandatory insurance
Students should not purchase insurance from their home country until they have read the University insurance waiver policy and are sure they will qualify for a waiver. The Office of International Education does not participate in the waiver process. Verify that the insurance policy that you are considering meets the waiver minimums before you purchase it. http://www.uhs.uga.edu/insurance/index.html
A student interested in waiving the insurance must follow the
waiver process and submit an on-line request no later than 10 days after the first day of classes for that semester to be eligible to waive out of the mandatory policy. To waive on-line go to http://www.pearceandpearce.com/PearceSite/Schools/GA/uga/ A student will receive a response from Pearce and Pearce to confirm if their request to waive out of the mandatory policy has been accepted or rejected within 3 business days. Please
recognize that failure to pay your student account in full by the UGA Student Accounts deadline will
result in being dropped from your classes and will jeopardize your ability to maintain
valid immigration status.
