Optional Practical Training(OPT) - Insurance
Am I required to maintain insurance while I am on OPT?
If you have graduated from UGA and have been authorized for OPT you are no
longer are required by the University of Georgia policy to have insurance. That
being said, it is extremely important to continue to have some “medical
emergency” insurance throughout your time in the U.S. Medical costs in the U.S.
are very high. The smallest medical/health issue can cost thousands of dollars
and will cause sever financial burden if you are without any medical insurance
at all.
How can I continue purchasing insurance through UGA?
An F-1 student who chooses to can voluntarily purchase the insurance policy
required for all current international students and graduate assistants at
UGA for up to 1 year after graduation from UGA. The insurance coverage can
be purchased only on a semester basis (August 1st -December 31st or January 1 –
July 31st) by enrolling on-line at the
Pearce & Pearce web site.
What are other options to purchase insurance?
An F-1 student who is interested in looking at other insurance options can do
a search on the internet or can refer to the
NAFSA (Association of International Educators) web site yellow pages
to contact insurance providers, that provide insurance coverage specifically
for international travel, directly.
