New International Faculty

Welcome to the University of Georgia! The role of the OIE International Student, Scholar and Immigration Service (ISSIS) is to assist you in making a smooth transition from your current institution to UGA in time to assume your responsibilities as a new faculty member. Once you have accepted a faculty position please contact the H visa advisor at sphaagen@uga.edu and attach a copy of your offer letter and contact information. If it is more convenient you may fax this information to (706) 425-3321. Sandy Haagen, sphaagen@uga.edu is the H visa advisor and will be your direct contact for any questions you may have regarding this visa category.

a   If you are currently inside the United States in student status –
Students in F-1 status should apply for Optional Practical Training as early as possible in the last semester of study.  This is especially critical for students completing degrees in the spring as the only way to remain in the US from May until the contract start date in August will be as F-1 students on OPT.  This status will allow you to complete the I-9 and begin employment while your hiring department initiates a request for a change of status to H-1.  Immediately after your arrival at UGA you should ask your department to begin this process.  If the department has started this change in status prior to your arrival on campus make sure to discuss any travel plans with the H advisor.   a   If you are in the United States in H status –
Your hiring department should contact the OIE ISSIS as soon as an offer of employment has been accepted. Individuals who already hold H status should be able to port to UGA (start work) once the application to transfer has been filed. It is critical to coordinate this transfer date with the ISSIS because individuals whose employment ends in May must be very careful to insure that they remain in status until the start of their contract at UGA. The majority of new faculty appointments begin in August of the academic year and you may or may not be eligible to remain in the US during the summer. It is also critical to clear any travel dates outside the US with the H advisor prior to leaving for vacation.

a   If you are in the United States in any other status –
ISSIS will assist you with a change of status to the H visa category. It is important for you to coordinate very closely with the H advisor regarding the termination date for your current status (employment) and your move to UGA. Any travel plans must be taken into consideration to insure that you are in a valid status at the time you start employment. Do not abandon your current status without consulting the H advisor at UGA.

a   If you are currently working outside the United States –

The University of Georgia will file an application for H status so you will be able to obtain a visa and enter the US. The university is a non-profit educational institution and therefore is not subject to the numerical limitations associated with the H visa category. The hiring department will initiate the application and you will be asked to furnish the following information:

  • Copies of any immigration documentation you may have from previous stays in the US.
  • Copy of passport I.D. page.
  • List of any periods of previous employment in the US (include visa classification, exact dates of employment and employer’s name)
  • CV
  • Copy of transcript and diploma for the highest degree received. This must accompany the H application. If this degree is from an institution outside the US a credential evaluation is required. If the documents are in a language other than English a certified translation will be required to accompany these documents. Please see "Credential Evaluations".
