About the OfficeThe Office of International Education (OIE) assists domestic students, faculty,
and international students and scholars in promoting international education both in the U.S. and abroad.
OIE administers the Office of Study Abroad,
International Student Scholars and Immigration Services (ISSIS),
UGA Costa Rica,
the UGA at Oxford Program,
as well as agreements for international cooperation and exchange.
The Office of Study AbroadThe University of Georgia sponsors a variety of Study Abroad Programs. OIE staff advise American students who are interested in studying, working, traveling, teaching, volunteering or doing an internship overseas. OIE offers a wide range of services related to overseas educational exchange. Students who are interested in studying overseas should attend at least one of the several Options Abroad Sessions held weekly in the Study Abroad Library, which help students choose an appropriate program for their personal and academic goals. Information about various countries, cultural adjustment, travel tips, health and safety information, and goal setting are some of the issues covered during these sessions.OIE houses the Study Abroad Library, which holds information on thousands of short- and long-term study abroad programs sponsored by other universities, consortia, and institutes. We also have information about exchange programs and the study abroad programs sponsored by UGA. International Student ID cards (ISIC) are also available from the Office of Study Abroad. International Student, Scholar and Immigration Services (ISSIS)The population of international students and scholars at the University of Georgia has grown from four students in 1946 to over 1600 today, and to assist this population, the International Student, Scholar and Immigration Services office within the Office of International Education assists international scholars and students in areas of immigration matters, financial concerns, health insurance, and related administrative details of international exchange. Immigration advice and assistance is provided to UGA international participants who are in F, J, TN, O, or H-1 non-immigrant status in the United States. Additionally, the office provides assistance with institutional sponsorship of permanent residency to eligible faculty and staff.UGA Costa RicaUGA Costa Rica offers inter-disciplinary, field-based learning opportunities and cultural immersion in a tropical cloud forest environment. In Fall 2005, UGA opened the Costa Rica Office on-campus within the Office of International Education. This office collaborates with faculty to develop study abroad and research programs, providing program planning, budgeting, marketing and recruitment, student orientation and general program administration services.UGA at Oxford ProgramThe UGA at Oxford Program has been in existence for nearly twenty years. One of the most successful programs on campus, the program is a big reason that the University of Georgia has risen to rank in the top five in the nation for University student participation in study abroad programs. The Program offers over 90 different courses in a wide variety of majors and subjects, and in addition to the Athens offices, has a residential center in North Oxford, England.International Cooperation and ExchangeThe Office of International Education is responsible for all the international cooperative agreements and addenda that the University of Georgia has with foreign institutions. The University of Georgia has approximately 180 International Cooperative Agreements (ICAs) in over 50 countries. These agreements allow for the formal development of activities such as faculty and student exchanges, collaborative research, seminars and workshops, and/or service programs. |
