The 25th Annual University of Georgia
Study, Work & Travel Abroad Fair

 Scholarship Competition - 2 awards of $2,500, Deadline August 20th, 2009

Dear UGA students interested in studying abroad & UGA program directors,

Ms. Kornelia Probst-Mackowiak, coordinator of the study abroad fair, and I are very pleased to report that with a generous gift from the President's Venture Fund, the Office of International Education is able to provide two $2,500 scholarships in celebration of this year's 25th anniversary Study, Work, and Travel Abroad Fair.  The UGA study abroad fair is one of the largest and best attended in the southeastern United States and is now celebrating a quarter century of helping students research study abroad opportunities.

Below are the guidelines for submission.

1). Because this scholarship is given in celebration of the fair's quarter-century of providing information about study abroad to UGA students, awards may be used for participation in any UGA program for credit (faculty-led group or exchange partner) which is participating in the Fall 2009 study abroad fair.  The funds can be used for study abroad spring or summer 2010.

2).  Two scholarship recipients will be chosen on the basis of an essay (1,000 word limit) on the theme:  "25 Years On: Why International Education Is More Important Than Ever."  Please provide a  title for your essay and your contact information.  Sources are not required, but please cite any used in MLA format.  Please sign your essay at the end indicating that it is your own work and that any outside material used is cited properly.

3).  Entering the scholarship contest gives the Office of International Education the right to excerpt from your essay in marketing and other materials.

4).  Essays should be submitted by 5:00 on August 20th, 2009, to Kasee Laster.  You may campus mail or US mail the essay to the address below, fax it to the fax number below, or (preferred), e-mail it as a PDF to Kasee Laster, klaster@uga.edu.

5). Selection of the best essays will be via faculty committee.  Each of the two winners will receive a $2,500 scholarship.

6).  Winners will be announced in mid-September.  The winning essays and students’ picture will be displayed at the fair and featured in publicity.  The two winners will be asked to spend some time at the fair, as their class schedules permit, greeting other students at the OIE table and talking about why they see international experience as a vital part of their education.

Fair information:

This year's fair will be held Wednesday, September 30th, and Thursday, October 1st, in the new Tate exhibit hall, 5th floor, Tate Center Extension.

Students, if you are already considering a particular UGA program, you may wish to confirm with your program director that they intend to exhibit at the fair and therefore the program is eligible for use of the scholarship.  Programs that have not yet registered for the fair may do so through July:

Please note that students do NOT have to pre-register to attend the fair; the registration form referenced above is for exhibitors.  Please ask your friends to come by the fair - faculty and advisors are always welcome to browse, too!
