Financial Aid and Scholarships
Students at UGA can use their federal and state financial aid, including the
HOPE scholarship, for study abroad. It may also be possible
to use institutional aid; check with a financial aid officer on your specific types of aid. This
aid can be used not only on University of Georgia study abroad programs, but on any study abroad
program for which the student will receive academic credit.
To receive academic credit for a non-UGA study abroad program or a UGA exchange program, you
should fill out a Credit Approval Form, available from the Office of International Education.
If you do not fill out this form, you will not receive financial aid for your study abroad
program. Once you have returned this form to the Office of International Education, your
financial aid should be released to you 10 days before the start of your program to the
address you have marked for financial aid in OASIS. If a financial aid check will arrive
while you are abroad, you should check with your bank about granting Power of Attorney to
a close friend or family member so that he or she can deposit your financial aid check.
Students planning to study abroad who are on financial aid besides the HOPE Scholarship should
visit the
Office of Student Financial Aid early to fill out forms and plan ahead in the use of
their yearly distribution of financial aid. If you are on the HOPE scholarship only, you can wait
until you have completed your Credit Approval Form, take a copy by the financial aid office and
verify that you have applied for aid for the summer.

Please note that if receipt of your transcript from a spring semester study abroad program is
delayed, this may affect your financial aid for the following fall semester. At the end of the
spring term, the Office of Student Financial Aid evaluates you for Satisfactory Academic Progress.
If your transcript has not yet been received by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, you
will lose your financial aid until it arrives and your grades are posted (this may take from
2-4 weeks from the time it arrives). This may mean (depending on the length of the delay) that
you will have to pay for your fall semester UGA tuition and fees and be reimbursed by HOPE or
other financial aid once your grades arrive. Failure to pay your tuition will result in late
fees and/or cancellation of your classes.

Many study abroad programs not listed here have established scholarships; always ask the
director of your study abroad program if it has its own scholarships. In addition, there is a
notebook of study abroad scholarships in the Study Abroad Library
in 303 Bank of America Building, 110 E. Clayton St., that lists additional scholarship opportunities.
