ACADEME: A UGA ACademic ADvising and MEntoring on-line Newsletter

Volume 1, Number 1

Fall, 2003

Welcome to ACADEME. This is the first edition of an on-line newsletter for undergraduate academic advisors and other interested individuals. Published by the Office of the Vice President for Instruction, University of Georgia, ACADEME has been developed to accomplish three primary goals:
  1.   to provide Academic Announcements - which should inform the work of academic advisors, including information about new courses, majors, minors, and policies, 

  2. to Spotlight...Best Practices in advising @ UGA, Student Affairs units which provide support and assistance to advisors and students, collaborations between academic and student affairs units, and noteworthy advisors, and

  3. to offer Professional Development information for academic advisors, including on-campus meetings/workshops, regional and national conferences, and other opportunities.

ACADEMIC ANNOUNCEMENTS 

New policies

  1. undergraduates now have the opportunity to take some courses Pass-Fail-- http://www.bulletin.uga.edu/bulletin/acad/Courses.html#Pass

  2. "Students may drop one, some, or all of their classes through the Drop-Add period without receiving any grade." Passed by the Council on October 23, 2003 and will become effective with Spring, 2004 Drop-Add. (Previously, students could drop all but one hour during D-A but had to get a W in at least one hour.) 

SPOTLIGHT

  Join the Director of the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) unit of the Health Center and others for a brown bag workshop on December 10th (12 noon) designed to help advisors learn more about referrals for students who are having psychological or emotional problems. RSVP required; see attached.

UGA Outstanding Academic Advisors win national awards! Both of the 2002-2003 UGA award-winners were recently recognized by the national advising association. Congratulations to Dr. Leigh Holland, Arts and Sciences, and Dr. Adam Davis, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

 Advisor Brown Bags - Dr. Stephanie Schlitz (Arts and Sciences) has organized a monthly brown bag series for all advisors across campus. These informal get-togethers are designed to give advisors an opportunity to meet with other faculty and staff and talk about advising and related matters. All sessions will take place from 12:00 noon until 1:00 pm in Room 214 of the new Student Learning Center (SLC). The Spring, 2004 schedule is:

January 23rd - Keith Parker, Associate Provost for Institutional Diversity
February 27th - Jim Day, Director of University Housing
March 26th - TBA
April 23rd - TBA
