REGENTS' TEST POLICY AND PROCEDURES

Regents’ Test Policy and Procedures (in PDF format)

  1. All incoming students who have not exempted both parts (Reading and Writing) of the Regents’ Test (RT) and/or are not enrolled in Learning Support Reading or English must register and take the test during their first term of enrollment.

  2. RT scores will be reported as Pass, Failure, and At-Risk.

  3. Students who fail one or both parts of the RT the first time with a score above that which is an at-risk score will be provided with information about the availability of the RGT course(s) but not mandated to register for them.

  4. Students who fail one or both parts of the RT the second time with a score above an at-risk score must receive remediation.  The Reading Skills remediation will be a Workshop and the Writing Skills remediation will RGTE 0199.  More information about the Reading Workshop will be made available sometime in the Fall Semester, 2008.

  5. Students who earn at-risk scores on one or both parts of the RT on the first attempt are required to participate in remediation.  Remediation for Reading Skills will be a Workshop and bi-weekly individualized instruction by appointment.  Remediation for Writing Skills will require enrollment in RGTE 0199.

  6. Students who earn at-risk scores on one or both parts of the RT on the second attempt must enroll in the appropriate course(s) (RGTR 0198 and/or RGTE 0199) the following term.

  7. Any student who fails one or both parts of the RT three or more times must be enrolled in RGTR 0198 and/or RGTE 0199 each term until the RT is satisfied.

  8. A student who needs the Test but does not take it is considered to have failed it.

  9. All transfer students (from University System of Georgia institutions or non-USG institutions) who have not satisfied the RT prior to enrollment at UGA must take it during their first term of enrollment. If they do not take and pass the RT in their first semester, and have transferred in two or more semesters of college credit, they will be required to enroll in the RGT course(s) in their second semester.  If they have transferred in fewer than two semesters of college credit, they will receive a second semester to satisfy the requirement before being placed in the RGT Skills courses.

  10. The Office of the Vice President for Instruction (OVPI) will no longer provide waivers of the RGT courses for students who have been placed into them.  If an instructor in one of the courses determines that there is an appropriate reason for a student to waive the course for a term, s/he may work with the OVPI to have the course dropped, for that term only.  No more than one waiver will be approved for any reason.
