- What is the Regents’ Test (RT)?
The Regents’ Test measures reading and writing skills. In order to receive an undergraduate degree from any USG institution, students have to display proficiency in these skills.
- How is the RT satisfied?
The Reading and Writing Skills may be satisfied by test or exemption (see question 3)

- How can students satisfy the RT requirement?
REGENTS’ READING SKILLS
- Regents’ Reading Test score: 61 or higher
- SAT Critical Reading score: 510 or higher
- ACT Reading score: 23 or higher
REGENTS’ WRITING SKILLS
- Regents’ Writing Test score of 2 or higher
- SAT Writing Section score of 560 or higher
- SAT Writing Section score of 500 or higher AND SAT Critical Reading score of 510 or higher
- ACT Combined English/Writing exam score of 24 or higher
- ACT Combined English/Writing exam score of 22 or higher AND ACT Reading score of 23 or higher
- College Board Advanced Placement (AP) English Language or Literature score of 3 or higher
- SAT II English Writing score of 650 or higher
- International Baccalaureate (IB) higher-level English exemption score of 4 or higher
The following four exemptions for the Regents’ Writing Skills are available only for students entering USG institutions before summer 2008:
SAT Critical Reading score of at least 530 AND a grade of "A" in English 1101
SAT Critical Reading score of at least 590 AND a grade of "B" in English 1101
ACT English score of at least 23 AND a grade of "A" in English 1101
ACT English score of at least 26 AND a grade of "B" in English 1101
- What are the Regents’ Skills courses: RGTR 0198 (2 hrs) and RGTE 0199 (3 hrs)?
RGT Skills courses are preparatory courses for the Regents’ Test. RGTR 0198 (2hr) is a reading improvement course while RGTE 0199 (3 hrs) covers writing. Students who have not passed or exempted the Test by the end of their second semester (not including summer), will be required to take RGT courses each term of enrollment until the Test is passed. RGT course credits do not count towards graduation.

- How do I register for the Test?
Students can register for the Test through OASIS. On the OASIS main menu, select Regents’ Test Registration & Results to begin the registration process.
- What is the format of the Reading Test?
Students are given one hour to complete the Reading Test, which is composed of 54 multiple-choice questions. The Reading section is similar to the SAT and ACT reading sections.

- What is the format of the Essay Test?
The Essay Test is an hour long. Four topics are provided and students must write about one. A list of the topics can be found at the Regents’ Test website.
- When and where can students check test results?
Regents’ Test results are posted on OASIS near the end of each semester. To view results, go to OASIS Main Menu, select Regents Test Registration & Results, and then click on Check Regents' Test results. OASIS only shows if a student has passed or failed the test; actual test scores are never posted.
- Do I have to take the Test or Regents’ Skills courses if I already have a bachelor’s or higher degree?
No, students who have a bachelor’s or higher degree are not required to take the Regents’ Reading and Writing tests or the Skills courses.
