UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT APPEAL PROCESS

University of Georgia students have the right to appeal decisions on academic matters. The following information explains the process for academic appeals.

Academic decisions at the University of Georgia may occur at several levels: instructor, department, college or school, or the University. An appeal may originate with respect to the actions of an instructor, with a department, a school or college, or at the University level. An appeal begins at the level at which the decision was made. If the student is dissatisfied with a negative decision and wants to appeal further, he or she must progress to successive levels of the appeals process as defined in the Guidelines for Routing of Academic Appeals. An appeal must be made within thirty days after receiving the written ruling.

The procedures for beginning an appeal may vary by the department or college. Students who have a matter they may wish to appeal should contact the department head or college or school dean.

At the University level, appeals are considered by the Petitions Subcommittee of the Educational Affairs Committee (EAC), a body of the University Council. EAC Petitions Subcommittee decisions may be appealed by the student successively to the University President, and except for grade appeals, the Board of Regents.

Petitions Subcommittee of the Educational Affairs Committee

The Petitions Subcommittee is comprised of three faculty members from the EAC. The Office of the Vice President for Instruction provides administrative support for the EAC and the subcommittee, and records of the subcommittee including student files and other pertinent materials are maintained in the OVPI.

Examples of student appeals heard by the Petitions Subcommittee of the Educational Affairs Committee are:

  • Readmission following second academic dismissal
  • Grade changes on appeal from dean’s office
  • Waiver or substitution of a University degree requirement
  • Waiver or substitution of a college degree requirement
  • Academic Renewal requests

All grade appeals must be initiated within one calendar year from the end of the term in which the grade was recorded.
