The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE, pronounced nessie) is a survey of freshmen and senior students which includes questions about their academic experiences. NSSE was developed by the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research and has been in use since 2000.
NSSE was first administered at UGA in 2003 when 1500 freshmen students and 1500 seniors were randomly selected to complete the survey. In 2005, UGA participated again and 2000 freshmen and 2000 seniors were invited to respond. In 2007, 2500 UGA freshmen and 2500 seniors were asked to complete the survey. In 2008, 773 colleges and universities in the United States and Canada, including the University of Georgia, are participating in NSSE. This year, approximately 4000 freshmen and 4000 seniors will receive invitations to complete the NSSE.
The National Survey of Student Engagement provides important information about the quality of undergraduate education at UGA. Several major initiatives have been developed or expanded as a result of responses in past years, including the creation of the Office of Service Learning, a major Writing Initiative, Learning Communities and the Provost’s Task Force on General Education and Student Learning.
In addition to the NSSE, UGA has participated in the pilot Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE) in 2003 and will do so again in 2008.
