What will Recruitment be like?
Recruitment is intended to give each Potential New Member an opportunity to become familiar with each of the 17 sororities at UGA, meet as many Greek women as possible and learn about each organization. The actual process of Recruitment involves four rounds of events. After each round of events, Potential New Members receive invitations to the next round of events and are permitted to choose a limited number of sororities they would like to visit again. Potential New Members will be divided into small groups with Gamma Chis (Recruitment Counselors) to guide them through the week.

  • Round One – During the first two days of Recruitment you will visit each sorority for 20 minutes. These events will introduce you to every chapter before you begin to make decisions. You will probably talk about yourself (your summer, your activities, where you are living, etc.) so don’t be shy – the sorority members want to get to know you. Round One events are high-energy and may include music, singing and clapping. These events are short, so relax and have fun!
  • Round Two – All of our sororities are located in beautiful historic homes near campus. During this round, the sisters will take time to show you around their homes and get to know you better. These events are 20 minutes long and if invited you may attend up to 12.
  • Round Three – Round Three is known as “Philanthropy Round.” Events are 40 minutes in length and allow you to learn about the sorority’s philanthropic contributions both locally and nationally. The sorority will show a video and perform a skit. If invited, you may attend up to six events.
  • Preferential Round (Prefs) – You will be making the final decision about which sororities you prefer during this round. These events are usually more serious than previous events as the sorority members will explain what it means to be a sister and what their sorority has to offer. Events are 50 minutes in length and if invited, you may attend up to three preferential events.

What do I wear?
Casual pants, skirts and dresses are appropriate for the first three rounds. Cool, lightweight fabrics are a necessity because of the hot weather. You will be walking a lot so comfortable footwear is essential. Heels are strongly discouraged for Round 1-3. Nice dresses, skirts or pants that you would wear to a wedding or religious service are appropriate for Prefs. Pref events are more formal, therefore many women choose to wear black dresses  and heels although please note that this is not a requirement. The most important thing during all rounds is to make sure you feel comfortable.

What if I am a legacy?
If you have a mother, or sister that is a member of a sorority, you are considered a legacy to that sorority. Some sororities also consider granddaughters, nieces, and cousins. Each PNM is considered on an individual basis – a legacy is no more obligated to join a particular sorority than the sorority is to pledge her. Panhellenic has no policies regarding legacies because each sorority has its own policy. You should consider your compatibility with the group and not feel obligated to a group because of your family members. Chapters vary from year to year and between campuses, so basing your decision on the experience of a relative would be unfair to yourself.

What about recommendations?
Recommendations (recs) are letters or statements from an alumna recommending a PNM for membership. While it is recommended that you secure as many recs as possible don’t worry if you can’t find a letter for a certain sorority – the sororities are also looking for recs on you.  If you wish to secure recs, the letters must come from sorority members who have graduated. You should not contact sororities about recs – it is only appropriate for the alumna to make contact with her sorority. For your convenience, a list of addresses to facilitate the recommendation process is located under the Forms & Applications section of the website.

If you are looking for an alumna to write you a recommendation, think about family members, teachers, friends, coworkers, and members of your religious/spiritual affiliation, etc. If you are still having difficulty obtaining recommendations you can also contact your local citywide Alumnae Panhellenic at http://www.npcwomen.org/alumnae-panhellenics/directory.aspx or the Atlanta Alumnae Panhellenic Association (AAPA) at http://www.atlantapanhellenic.org/. Please visit the AAPA’s contacts page for additional help with securing recommendations.
